LIDAR is used as a method for measuring the distance to a target using pulsed laser light and measuring these pulses with a sensor. These sensors must have a very fast response and small pulse width in order to be as efficient as possible. The MCP-PMTs offered by Photonis for LIDAR applications demonstrate excellent detection capability at low and high photon flux rates. The Hi-QE photocathodes integrated in these detectors exhibit a very low dark count rate, lowering the threshold of detection, while the fast timing properties extend the counting rate to GHz photon flux, resulting also in high spatial resolution. Combined with high linearity and gating options, these MCP-PMTs are excellent candidates for applications when single photon counting as well as high photon flux rate is required.
